Manuel Antonio National Park- FAQ

Internationally recognized as being one of the most biodiverse parks on the planet, this park has mangroves, hiking trails, 4 different beaches, monkeys, sloths and more!

To plan an amazing day at the park, keep reading our FAQs below so you have all the info you need to know before you go!

Do I really need a tour guide?

No, you do not need a tour guide to go hiking, see monkeys or enjoy the 4 beaches at the park.

However, if you want to see and learn about a variety of wildlife (and get to use a telescope to get great pictures), then a guided tour is definitely the way to go!

How much does it cost?

  • $18 pp: park entrance fee to go on your own
  • $59 pp / $37pp kids under 12: GROUP guided tour (max 10 people), includes transportation, park entrance fee, drinks and snacks
  • $95 pp: PRIVATE guided tour, includes transportation, park entrance fee, drinks and snacks

What should I bring?

Pack plenty of water and food (you are only permitted to take pre-peeled fruit and sandwiches into the park… chips, alcohol or junk food in wrappers are NOT allowed). Wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring your swim suit, sunblock, insect repellent, towel and beach blanket.

*OTHER ITEMS NOT PERMITTED: speakers, cigarettes, drones & coconuts (there`s people selling coconuts near the entrance, so if you buy one, you need to drink it before entering!)

When is the park open / best time to go?

Manuel Antonio National Park is open to visitors from Wednesday to Monday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (closed on Tuesdays).

Are there bathrooms inside the park?

Yes, there are bathrooms, showers and changing stations inside the park (near the beach). You are not allowed to use soap or shampoo (not eco-friendly for the park) so don`t bother to bring those things.

Where do I buy tickets?

Tickets can only be obtained through the website https://serviciosenlinea.sinac.go.cr/.

Where do I park?

Around the park entrance there are paid parking lots ($10- $15 per car). If you dont want to deal with or pay for parking, just take the bus or a taxi.

What`s the deal with all those guys and their whistles?

Once you get down to the “beach town” where the park is, you will notice a ton of guys lining the streets blowing their whistles like crazy and trying to get you to stop and park where they tell you to. They will make you feel like you have to listen to them and hire a tour guide to get into the park. You do not. Just politely smile and say “no gracias, pura vida” and keep going until you get to the park entrance (and find a paid parking lot close by).

Can I feed the monkeys?

ABSOLUTELY NOT! You might think it`s cute to feed a monkey a banana, but this is actually harmful to them and NEVER ACCEPTABLE. Don`t leave food out if you swim at the beach. It`s best to hang your backpack in a tree because otherwise the monkeys will open the zipper on their own and steal your food and whatever else they think is cool inside your bag.

Watch out for the racoons too!  They work in teams with the monkeys to try and steal your food….AGAIN, THIS IS NEVER ACCEPTABLE!  The monkeys and the racoons do not know better.  You do, so please do the right thing (not matter how tempted you may be to get the perfect selfie with a monkey) and NEVER FEED THE WILDLIFE!
